Those of you who know Dad are already aware that he is flying out to California for Thanksgiving, I thought I would share some of the details of The Odyssey of Jim Willett.
A large amount of effort went into making this a memorable trip for Dad, when Chris and I told Dad that we were flying him out for the holiday, his immediate response was "Fly me cheap!" Oh we planned on doing that. A call went out to Matt who is stationed in the Air Force in Colorado. Matt's response was "No way I don't want a dishonorable discharge, besides my commander told me the only place they would fly Dad is to Iraq, which would violate the Geneva Convention for CRUEL AND UNUSUAL TORTURE!" HMM somebody else knows about Dads loving personality.
Our next attempt was to contact UPS and try and send him air cargo from Roscommon Lumber. Cousin Jeff was willing to help, he placed a shipping sticker on Dad's shirt and had him stand in front of the store with a sign that said "UPS PICK UP -- YES." UPS refused. I tried to convince them that Dad wouldn't mind, besides it was a win,win situation. We got to fly Dad cheap and if the plane crashed the pilot would have someone other than a volleyball named Wilson to talk to.
Well we got Dad a ticket the old fashion way, we bought it. Option 1 had a total flight time of 9 hours and 47 minutes, 4 stops and a hour lay-over. Option 2 had a flight time of 12 hours and 53 minutes with with 5 stops, and 3 and 1/2 hours of lay-overs. It was also $20.00 DOLLARS CHEAPER! Dad said "cheap", guess what flight he got. We even added a little bit of excitement to his itinerary, we gave him 35 minutes to make his connection in Detroit. Well we started to worry about his blood pressure so we ordered the senior healthy choice inflight meal for him, we all know how much Dad loves fish and rice! Dad said he had never been to Las Vegas so we gave him a 3 hour lay-over there, so if you see him walking around with a cup in his hand it's not coffee, he's collecting change for the slot machine, feel free to throw some in his cup the hot liquid is for washing the coins. Well that's about all for right now, when Dad gets here I'll be sure to keep you posted. Don't you wish you had three sons like us!!
