The Roscommon County Herald-News encourages readers to submit photographs for publication.
Photos may be submitted as color or black and white prints or in electronic form as .jpg files on disk or by e-mail.
The best photos show people involved in some activity, not just posed.
The most common mistakes people make with photos are not getting close enough to their subject and shooting when the subject is backlighted.
Please include a separate sheet of information about what¹s in the picture, describing the event, the date, and identifying everyone in the picture by first and last name, spelled correctly. Please include your name and a daytime phone number we can call if we need more information.
Photos are printed according to space availability, their potential interest to our readers and the quality of the photo itself.
In order to make it possible to reproduce photos in a pleasing manner, please follow these guidelines.
For printed photographs:
- Do not write on the backs of photos. The writing indents the printed surface of the photo and causes problems with our scanning process. Also, please do not use paper clips with photos.
- Avoid touching the printed surface of the photos with your fingers.
Fingerprints are nearly impossible for us to remove. Handle the photos by the edges, or use gloves.
- If you would like your photo returned, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
For digital photographs:
- Do not submit photographs printed from inkjet printers. The dot pattern on these pictures does not reproduce well when scanned for newspaper use. Please e-mail your digital photograph instead.
- When e-mailing, save your photo in the .jpg format, which can be opened with both PC and Macintosh computer systems. Also, it works best if digital photos are sent at the original size at which they were taken.
- If a photo must be reduced due to a slow Internet connection, please make sure that the minimum width of the photo is 600 pixels.
- Photos on disk can be accepted if the disk was formatted for use in a Macintosh computer. PC disks cannot be read with our equipment at this time.
